Crochet pennies with circles of wool, sure why not.
Remember there are no rules.
Granny squares in the round would be a penny. Crochet a three row, round penny. Stitch up varying colours, felt or not felt and make a penny rug. You wouldn't have to back them at all, no threads to hide. Just thread and hide the loose wool ends and quickly whip stitch your crocheted pennies together to make a mat.

I haven't made one, but I've been thinking of asking my mom to crochet one for me. Now I can show her the article so she knows what I'm talking about, lol. Thanks for posting!
